Journey set off for the stairwell, her stride long. Her footsteps thumped down the hallway.

Lucas called to her. “Where are you running off to?”

“To talk to Dr. Baker again. I’ve got a bad feeling about that guy.”

Dr. Baker knew all the victims. He had no alibi, and he knew when they were being discharged. He’d even discharged them. Access to the medications used to drug them would’ve been complicated, it was true. But it was certainly possible for a person in his position. And he was in favor of doctors helping psychiatric patients end their lives by suicide if they wanted to.

And the nurses thought there was something off about him. Journey trusted a nurse’s intuition.

Journey found the psychiatrist’s door opposite the stairwell open. Without waiting or knocking, she stormed into the office.

The room was empty. Dr. Baker’s oversize executive chair stood at an angle, as though he’d leaped out of it and rushed off in a hurry. His computer was still on.

Lucas stopped in the doorway. “Maybe he’s on his rounds again.”

“Maybe. But I didn’t see him.”

A nurse strolled down the hall. She pushed a silver cart that rattled like a box of pills.

Journey stopped her. “Hey, you seen Dr. Baker?”

The nurse frowned. She looked tired, though the afternoon had barely begun. “Dr. Baker? I don’t think he’s in today. He’s not supposed to be, since he’s not on the rotation.”

Irritation flickered in Journey. “We just spoke to him. He’s here. Or he was here.”

“Really?” Leaving the cart in the middle of the hall, the nurse opened one of the wards and called inside. “Hey, Tatiana, was Dr. Baker in today?”

The reply was inaudible, but it seemed to surprise the nurse and impress her. “Huh, really? Well, good for him.”

She pulled her head back and retrieved her cart.

“So he did come in today. Wanted to check on some patients and review some records on his day off. On the Fourth, even. Apparently, he approved a few discharges today too.”

A shiver ran down Journey’s spine. “Dammit. Have any of those patients been released yet?”

The nurse shook her head. “Not yet.”

That was a blessing.

Lucas bent toward her to speak low in her ear. “If I didn’t know better, I’d say he was picking a target.”

“You don’t know better. Neither do I. We need to find him.”

The nurse was still standing there. “He just left, if that helps.”

“When?” Journey needed to know how much of a head start he had.

The nurse pushed the cart down the hall. “A couple of minutes ago. You might still be able to catch him. Drives a red convertible something. Can’t miss it.”

Lucas was already heading for the stairwell and Journey followed. As they bounded down the stairs, Lucas called up. “You don’t think he’s about to…you know…” He imitated an explosion with his hands. “Whoosh?”

“I hope not.” And yet Journey hoped Dr. Baker did intend to set fire to someone. If they caught him with a container of gasoline and a box of matches, they could shut this thing down now.
